All vinyl is a trend these days. It offers the most value for the decorating dollar.
However, there are some significant differences between sheet and luxury vinyl flooring. Please continue reading to see which is right for you.
Luxury vinyl flooring: waterproof
While sheet vinyl is highly water-resistant, the luxury version is entirely waterproof. What's the difference, you ask? Water-resistant means it must be wiped immediately.
Waterproof means the floor is impenetrable, whether spilled on or submerged.
Luxury: thicker and layered
All vinyl is strong, but luxury vinyl flooring is five times thicker than sheet. It's also layered and has a tough, clear, strong coating over the printed design layer.
That coating, called the wear layer, protects the floor from scratches, scuffs, and dents. In addition, it keeps spills from absorbing with your vinyl flooring in Grass Valley, CA.
Depending on quality, luxury vinyl flooring can last over 25 years. Sheet vinyl lasts anywhere from 10 to 20 years.
If you want a seamless look, go with sheet vinyl (also referred to as “traditional” vinyl). This comes in widths of 6, 12, and sometimes even 13 feet. Many feel the lack of seams adds to the water resistance.
Many others feel that extra seams add to the realism. Luxury vinyl can be cut into square, tile-sized pieces (LVT) that can be used with or without grout.
LVT (luxury vinyl tile) is often used for stone and ceramic echoes. Vinyl plank flooring is used mainly to mimic hardwood floorboards.
Luxury vinyl flooring can go over most existing subfloors. However, sheet vinyl must be installed over an ultra-flat and even surface, so it often requires a new one.
